We have now replaced the Orange broadband and fixed line telephone with satellite internet.
The connection should work automatically about five minutes after it is plugged in. The Tooway box is the satellite modem and this is connected to the ASUS wireless router (on top of the white cupboard next to the fuse board). There should be no need to connect or disconnect any cables from these boxes. If the wireless connection fails power off the ASUS box by pressing the button at the back. Wait a couple of minutes and then power on again and wait another couple of minutes. There is no password to the wireless network which is called Le Lac house.
The download speed when tested in late June 2014 was 20.11Mbps download and 4.81Mbps upload. Speeds can drop dramatically from time to time, particularly when there is severe weather.
The monthly download allowance is 25Gb. After that is used the rate drops to the equivalent of dial-up speed. There are unlimited downloads from 23:00 to 07:00. If you want to check to see whether the connection is working go to 192.168.100.1 (without the “www”) and click modem. If you want to check monthly usage and the allowance period go to http://checkportal.skylogicnet.com.
There is also a wireless extender which, as the name suggests, extends the wi-fi range. It’s best to leave this plugged in to avoid having to reset it. (If you do need to reset press the WPS button on the wi-fi router until the green light on the left flashes on and off. Then press the WPS button on the extender and it will pair with the router.) If you place the extender on the floor outside the window you will have a full wi-fi signal for all the area around the pool.
Although you should enjoy very fast downloads and no problem with streaming such as Youtube, satellite connections are subject to latency (a slight delay in establishing the initial connection). This means that it is not suitable for online gaming and it may take a few seconds for pages to load initially.
Because we no longer have a fixed telephone line you should note that the emergency telephone number available from a mobile phone is 112. The person taking the call will speak English.
