We are lucky to be in one of the best places in the world for finding out about wine.

The holy grail is St Emilion, the UNESCO World Heritage Site which is less than half an hour from the house. By the way, the drive there is a treat, through hectares of the finest vineyards in the world.

The best local vineyard visit is with Caro Feely, in Saussignac, where you can share her evangelism for organic wine with an organised visit to see behind the scenes just what’s involved in wine production

The best local wine to buy is Chateau Laulerie from Saint-Méard-de-Gurson (just a few minutes away), from where the Dubard family sell their wine all over the world and you can buy it from the vineyard for about 5 euros a bottle. A visit to the vineyard (just down the road (about 1km) heading south from St Méard) is highly recommended. They’ll welcome you without an appointment (10:00-12:00 and 14:00 to 17:00 weekdays) and invite you to try their wines. The Tripadvisor reviews say it all.

Serious connoisseurs need to set aside a day and possibly an overnight visit to St Emilion and, of course, Bordeaux is the, par excellence, place to find out about wine with wine bars and restaurants devoted to the best wine in the world, albeit at prices to justify their superior standing.
